Hong Kong media urged to help mainland firms expand overseas

Government Press Secretary Cheung Jim-jing has said Hong Kong media can help mainland Chinese enterprises expand overseas by offering brand planning, marketing and international image management services.

In a social media post, Cheung said the city's first five-year development plan calls for boosting the international communication capacity of mainstream media, and that two consecutive policy addresses have pledged government support for local media to expand networks outside Hong Kong and tell the city's story well.

Cheung was speaking after the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) showcased a new platform at the ninth China International Import Expo in Shanghai. The platform, called the "overseas expansion special class cross-sector professional services platform", lists service providers in eight areas to meet the needs of mainland firms going global.

Cheung said mainland enterprises need branding and promotion work when expanding overseas, and that Hong Kong media, with their bilingual and trilingual capabilities, international perspective, creativity and market sense, are well placed to provide such services.

The TDC platform has already included four local media organisations, clearly displaying their service scope, audience reach and overseas service experience. Cheung said this can help mainland companies match with suitable resources while allowing local media to showcase their strengths and develop overseas business, calling it a win-win cooperation model that can strengthen international communication soft power.
