Labour Exports to Taiwan Fishery Industry Halted

10 February 2002
According to the Xinhuanet (10 February, 2002), the government has announced that it will suspend China's labour exports to Taiwan's fishery employers. The decision was made as a protest against the Taiwan authorities for allegedly failing to protect the fishing workers' legal rights.

There have been reports of maltreatment of China's migrant fishery workers by Taiwanese employers. The Xinhua report cited a 1999 case in which the captain of a Taiwan fishing vessel shot dead 15 mainland workers, but had yet to be prosecuted.
