Priority hiring, skills training promised for 200 contract postal staff: Ingrid Yeung
Hong Kong's Civil Service Secretary Ingrid Yeung announced targeted training and priority recruitment for over 200 Hongkong Post employees denied permanent status and offered two-year contracts instead. Training includes software skills for clerical roles.
The government will provide targeted training and priority recruitment for more than 200 Hongkong Post employees who were recently denied permanent civil service status, Secretary for the Civil Service Ingrid Yeung Ho Poi-yan said.
The affected staff, all of whom have completed their probationary periods, were instead offered new two-year contracts. Yeung said the government is committed to helping these employees transition smoothly by equipping them with the skills they need for their new roles.
For instance, postal workers applying for clerical grades will receive training in word processing and spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel, Yeung noted. The priority hiring measure aims to ensure these contract workers are given first consideration for relevant vacancies within the civil service.
The announcement comes after the Hongkong Post employees learned they would not be converted to permanent positions despite completing their probation. Yeung stressed that the government values their service and wants to support their career development through the training and recruitment scheme.
No further details on the timeline or total number of training places were provided by the Civil Service Bureau. The affected workers are expected to begin the training programmes in the coming months.
