MTR halts unauthorised pillar repairs at Tung Chung West station site

MTR Corporation has ordered an immediate halt to unauthorised filling repairs on pillar tops at the Tung Chung West station construction site, the company said on 7 November. The repairs, carried out on the platform level, were not pre-approved by MTR. The corporation has launched an investigation to review pillars and construction procedures across both the platform and concourse levels.

MTR stressed that the situation does not involve structural safety. It said it places great importance on supervision and engineering quality in its railway projects and has rigorous quality assurance mechanisms and procedures in place.

The main contractor must submit a comprehensive report and a corrective plan to MTR, the company said. All necessary approvals, including from MTR, must be obtained before work can resume. Any corrective work must fully comply with relevant statutory requirements before final acceptance.

All costs arising from the unauthorised work will be borne by the main contractor, MTR said. The company added that it discovered the issue last month during regular inspections of unfinished work and has notified relevant government departments.
