Hong Kong to boost aviation links, aiming for 240 destinations by 2030

Hong Kong's Maritime Week will kick off on 15 November, with the government staging flagship projects across sea, land and air every week this month, according to Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan.

In a blog post, Chan revealed that November will begin with four days of aviation-related activities, including the Super Hub Expo and a forum hosted by a leading aircraft lessor in Hong Kong. She added that a delegation led by Civil Aviation Administration of China Deputy Director Han Jun is visiting the city this week to attend an aviation industry seminar, allowing direct exchanges with the entire airport community. The seminar will give the industry first-hand insight into Beijing's thinking behind the 15th Five-Year Plan's explicit support for consolidating and enhancing Hong Kong's status as an international aviation hub, its aviation blueprint and unique strategic positioning. Chan said this will help the SAR government team and the industry to precisely align with national strategy, deepen high-quality civil aviation development and create a triple win for the country, Hong Kong and enterprises.

Chan noted that the "trunk connects, full network links" transit facilitation service has officially been launched, tightly linking Hong Kong's aviation network with the national aviation plan. She described it as an example of national support for Hong Kong and of Hong Kong contributing its strengths to the country. The first phase offers two projects connecting flights from Hangzhou and Wuhan to Hong Kong and onward international routes, including destinations such as Australia and Canada, providing passengers with more convenient and efficient transit experiences. Currently, over 100 cross-airline combinations for transit via Hong Kong are available weekly, and tickets are now on sale. Chan expressed hope for more "connect-the-world" air transport corridors in future.

Hong Kong currently connects to about 220 global destinations. The government aims to strengthen ties with 10 or more civil aviation partners annually between 2026 and 2030, targeting 240 destinations at Hong Kong International Airport within five years, with a focus on high-growth potential markets in South America, Central Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
