Hong Kong warns public against false claims on 24-hour use of new Huanggang port
Hong Kong government warns that social media falsely claims Guangdong-Hong Kong regular quota vehicles can use the new Huanggang port all day. Officials say the restriction limiting such vehicles to overnight hours from midnight to 6:30am remains unchanged, and no adjustment is planned.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has issued a warning against false information circulating on social media and messaging groups, which falsely claims that Guangdong-Hong Kong regular quota vehicles will be allowed direct, round-the-clock access to the new Huanggang port when it opens.
According to a government press release on 5 October 2026, current rules require applicants for Guangdong-Hong Kong regular quotas to meet conditions set by mainland authorities and submit specified documents, such as cross-border business registration papers. After mainland authorities issue a "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Motor Vehicle and Driver Approval Notice" (commonly known as a "permit card"), applicants must apply to the SAR Transport Department for a closed-road permit for the port listed on the permit card.
A government spokesman stressed that vehicles holding such designated-port permits are currently only allowed to travel between Guangdong and Hong Kong between midnight and 6:30am daily, using either the existing Lok Ma Chau control point or the forthcoming new Huanggang port. The spokesman said: "Social media and messaging groups have repeatedly spread similar false information, impersonating government announcements, claiming quotas have no port or eligibility restrictions as a lure. With the opening of the new Huanggang port imminent, these posts mislead road users in both places, and the public must be extra vigilant."
The SAR government reiterated that Guangdong-Hong Kong regular quotas and port-use arrangements are serious matters that must be jointly discussed and considered comprehensively by both governments. It stated there are currently no plans to adjust the rule restricting vehicles with designated-port permits to overnight use of the Lok Ma Chau control point or the new Huanggang port. The public should rely only on official announcements, especially regarding the opening arrangements for the new Huanggang port, and should verify information carefully to avoid being misled or having travel plans disrupted.
