Hong Kong orders recall of bamboo shoots over labelling breach

Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety (CFS) has ordered the recall of a batch of pre-packaged bamboo shoots after a sample was found to have breached food labelling regulations. The product, '高山細筍' (High Mountain Fine Bamboo Shoots), sold under the brand '集森' (Jisen) with a net weight of 250 grammes and a best-before date of 2 September 2027, originated from mainland China and was distributed by Jisen Food Company.

A CFS spokesman said the sample, taken from the distributor, tested positive for sulphur dioxide. While the level of the additive complied with legal requirements, the product's label failed to state the additive's functional class and name as required. The CFS has instructed the distributor to stop selling and remove the affected batch from shelves, and the distributor has initiated a recall. Consumers can contact the distributor's hotline at 6275 2510 during office hours for recall inquiries.

Sulphur dioxide is a preservative commonly used in dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products. It is water-soluble and most of it can be removed by washing and cooking. However, individuals with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide may experience symptoms such as asthma, headaches or nausea after consumption.

The spokesman reminded the trade that the use of preservatives in food must comply with the Preservatives in Food Regulations (Cap. 132BD). Under the Food and Drugs (Composition and Labelling) Regulations (Cap. 132W), pre-packaged foods sold in Hong Kong containing more than 10 parts per million of sulphites must declare the functional class and name of the sulphites on the ingredient list. Offenders convicted face a maximum fine of HK$50,000 and up to six months' imprisonment.

The CFS said it would notify the trade and continue to follow up on the case. Investigations are ongoing.
