Hong Kong finds no abnormal radiation in Japanese food samples

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS), under the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, is conducting comprehensive radiation tests on all Japanese aquatic products, sea salt and seaweed that are not banned from entering Hong Kong. Products are only released for market supply after being confirmed to have radiation levels within safe limits.

From noon on 30 October to noon on 2 November 2026, the CFS tested 341 food samples of Japanese imported aquatic products, their processed items, seaweed and sea salt for radiation. No samples were found to have radiation levels exceeding safety standards, according to the CFS's dedicated webpage on control measures for Japanese imported food.

During the same period, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) tested 150 local fishery product samples for radiation. All samples passed the tests, the AFCD reported on its website.

The Hong Kong Observatory has also stepped up monitoring of environmental radiation levels in local waters. As of now, no abnormalities have been detected, the Observatory stated on its seawater radiation monitoring webpage.

From 24 August 2023 to noon on 2 November 2026, the CFS and AFCD have tested a total of 272,082 Japanese imported food samples (including 169,436 samples of aquatic products, their processed items, seaweed and sea salt) and 57,962 local fishery product samples for radiation, with all samples passing the tests.
