The Hospital Authority has appealed to the public to support organ donation as a 13-year-old boy urgently needs a liver transplant. The boy is currently receiving treatment at Queen Mary Hospital in a serious condition, with severe liver failure and complications including persistent hyperammonaemia and cholangitis. Clinical assessment has placed him at the top of the waiting list for liver transplants for patients with O-positive blood type.
A spokesman for the authority said that given the patient's critical condition, the hospital is actively searching for a suitable liver locally. At the same time, preparations have been made to seek assistance from mainland China through the Special Administrative Region government. If a deceased person on the mainland is willing to donate organs and no suitable recipient is available there, coordination could enable a cross-border donation to Hong Kong for matching and transplantation.
The spokesman stressed that once a suitable liver is found, the authority will strictly follow the relevant organ transplant regulations and submit applications to the regulatory bodies promptly. All procedures will comply with the required standards and legal requirements, and the transplant surgery will be arranged as soon as possible.
The authority reiterated its call for citizens to consider donating the organs of deceased relatives, emphasising that such acts can save lives in critical situations.
