AI-assisted animation premieres in Hong Kong with government support

The Creative Industries Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has announced the local premiere of the animated film "The Covenant of the Boundless" (無涯之約), which was supported under the third edition of the "Future Animation — AI-Assisted Animation Production Support Scheme". Creative Industries Commissioner Lau Sai-ming, speaking at the premiere, said the film's successful launch demonstrated the positive results of the government's efforts to promote the development of the creative industries.

Lau stated that the Creative Industries Office will continue to use a variety of funding schemes to support local creators in developing more internationally competitive animated intellectual property (IP) works. The office will also assist the industry in participating in film festivals and trade platforms overseas to facilitate IP transactions and cross-sector collaboration.

"The Covenant of the Boundless" was written and directed by Hung Ling-ching and produced by Chu Hon-wai. It was produced by ORINPIX Studios Limited. The story depicts an apocalyptic disaster triggered by "lies". The creative team combined traditional film and television production experience, martial arts action design characteristic of Hong Kong action films, sci-fi elements and cutting-edge technology to create an animated work with local cultural features.

The film was first unveiled globally at the Hong Kong International Animation Expo 2026, and was also exhibited at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. It has been selected for the 22nd Los Angeles Chinese Film Festival. Last month, the creative team set up a limited-time pop-up store locally to promote the film and its IP-related merchandise.
