China Labour Bulletin has received reports that imprisoned labour rights lawyer, Xu Jian, is suffering from hypertension. Soon after Xu's detention in 1999, he was taken ill with hepatitis. Xu has been applying for parole on medical grounds since 2001, but has been rejected.
Xu was sentenced to four year imprisonment, for the crime of subversion, on 8 July, 2000, by the Baotou city law court, in the north western province of Inner Mongolia. He is serving his sentence in the Chifeng city prison in Inner Mongolia.
Xu Jian was arrested after he acted as the lawyer representing laid off workers from two major state-owned enterprises in Baotou city: the No. 2 Main Machinery Factory, where Xu Jian had previously worked, and the Baotou Steel Company. Workers from both companies were seeking redress after they went through restructuring, resulting in mass redundancies.
