Nineteen Migrants Elected as People's Congress Delegates

19 February 2002
It was reported on 19 February, 2002, that a record of 19 migrants were elected delegates to the local People's Congress in Yangxunqiao town, Shaoxing county in the coastal province of Zhejiang. The elected delegates said they would try to table the concerns and demands of the county's 167,000 migrant workers during their three-year term at the People's Congress. Most of those elected as delegates come from highly-educated backgrounds and are working in senior management posts. Three of them are enterprise owners.

There are over 100 million migrants working and living in various Chinese cities, especially in the southern and coastal regions. They normally enjoy little legislative, social and political protection. It was reported that 10 other counties in the Zhejiang Province would include migrants as candidates for the local People's Congress.
