Eight killed in fire in Guangdong

According to reports in the Chinese press, eight people were killed and a further 32 injured when a fire swept through a seven-storey building in Tianhe District, Guangzhou, capital of
Guangdong Province, on 14 June 2003.

The fire was believed to have started at around 3.45 a.m. It is estimated that some 90 people were living in the building, mostly migrant workers.

The cause of the blaze is not known. However, many of China’s migrant workers are forced to live in overcrowded, unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
