Daqing May Day Song Contest Attempts to Drown Out Demonstrations

06 May 2002

Over 10,000 oilfield workers in Daqing have continued their daily demonstrations against retrenchment for the eighth consecutive week at the Tieren (Iron Man) Square.

On the eve of May Day, the Daqing city government held a big song contest in the square. The protesting workers pointed out that this was the authorities' attempt to mask the mass rally with a big crowd watching the May Day Harvest Song Contest.

A retrenched woman worker, who has been taking part in the two-month long protest, told China Labour Bulletin that cadres from the Daqing Petroleum Administration Bureau have been going to the square to persuade the demonstrators to call off their protest. At the same time, the worker said she had noticed that a growing number of the leaders of the demonstration had gone missing and feared that they might have been detained.
