This month, China Labour Bulletin (CLB) collaborated with the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO) to release a report emphasising an urgent need in human rights due diligence among international electronics and garment brands. The report analyzed 20 companies and found that only 40% of garment brands have disclosed responsible exit policies, while major tech brands like Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft have no such policies. This lack of transparency puts workers at risk of wage arrears, withheld benefits, and unpaid compensation for contract termination.

Many factories that plan to relocate or shut down fail to properly accommodate workers as well. Workers at Plotech Technology Kunshan Co Ltd in Jiangsu Province protested against the factory’s relocation, as it failed to provide lawful severance pay. Instead, the company implemented a “5-day, 8-hour work schedule,” banning overtime to force workers to resign due to low income, which sparked employee discontent.

In September 2024, CLB presented in a session titled “From Silence to Solutions: Elevating Worker Voices and Increasing Supply Chain Transparency in the Electronics and Garment Sector in Asia”, which was featured in the United Nations Responsible Business and Human Rights Forum (UNRBHR Forum).
