China Labour Bulletin has learnt that approximately 400 workers from the Luyuan Timber Company Ltd in Shuichang county, Zhejiang province have been on strike since 10 February 2003. The strike is continuing.

In a conversation with some of the workers involved, China Labour Bulletin learnt that the workers are striking in protest against the loss of their shares in the company and alleged corruption in the company.

China Labour Bulletin contacted the county president of the All China Federation of Trade Unions for his response to the events. The president replied that he was working with the government task force investigating the strike. The workers interviewed by China Labour Bulletin however replied that the county union had told the workers to end the strike and get back to work.

China Labour Bulletin also contacted Li Shui City Chinese Communist Party Discipline Committee to ask if they had followed up the claims of the workers. They have responded that they did not know of the events but would investigate the claims.

China Labour Bulletin will be issuing more details of the strike and views from the workers in the next few days
