Hong Kong stocks close 1.8% higher, tech index up over 3%

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 425 points, or about 1.8%, to close at 24,211 on 9 October 2026. The tech index surged over 3%, driven by Xiaomi, Alibaba, Meituan and Tencent, while financial and gold-related stocks also supported gains.

Hong Kong stocks extended gains in the afternoon session on 9 October 2026, with the Hang Seng Index rising as much as 440 points before closing at 24,211 points, up 425 points, or about 1.8 per cent. Turnover on the main board reached about HK$209.2 billion.

The technology index drove the market higher, closing up more than 3 per cent at 4,197 points. Xiaomi rose nearly 10 per cent, the biggest gainer among both Hang Seng Index and tech index constituent stocks. Alibaba, Meituan and Tencent each rose near 3 per cent or more. Platform stocks also performed well, with Bilibili and Kuaishou gaining 4 per cent and over half a per cent respectively. AI and semiconductor stocks saw mixed results.

Major financial stocks also supported the market. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, HSBC and AIA rose from nearly 1 per cent to nearly 3 per cent. Mainland Chinese banks performed well, while mainland insurers had mixed results. China Life fell more than 2 per cent, the worst performer among Hang Seng Index constituents.

Gold-related stocks were strong, with Laopu Gold and Zijin Mining rising about half a per cent or more. Pharmaceutical stocks were weak, with China Biologic, BeiGene, Hansoh Pharma and CSPC falling from over 1 per cent to over 2 per cent.

Eswin Computing, which debuted on the first trading day, rose about 6 per cent above its initial public offering price at one point, but also fell about 12 per cent. It closed at HK$1.535, about 1 per cent below its IPO price.

For the week, both the Hang Seng Index and the tech index accumulated gains of about 1 per cent, ending a four-week and two-week losing streak respectively.
