Water supply restored to two Jordan buildings after burst pipe

The Water Supplies Department (WSD) said water supply to two buildings in Jordan was restored at about 9pm on 3 November, after a burst pipe earlier in the day.

A contractor carrying out emergency repairs to a saltwater main on Tak Shing Street in Jordan accidentally burst an adjacent old asbestos-cement freshwater pipe, which supplied water to Ko King Terrace and Hong Un Court, the WSD said on a social media platform.

During the incident, the WSD arranged temporary water supplies for affected residents. It placed two water trucks and five water tanks near the affected buildings for residents to collect water, and deployed a 'water supply special attack team' to help residents fetch water. The department also proactively delivered water bags and bottled water to those in need, to minimise inconvenience. Shops were able to largely remain open after receiving temporary water supplies.

The WSD said the contractor had implemented measures to protect underground utilities, including other pipes, before starting work, and had confirmed the pipe alignment with department staff on site. The WSD is investigating the cause of the incident. The burst asbestos-cement freshwater pipe had already been included in a risk-based water pipe improvement programme. The WSD said it would coordinate closely with relevant departments and the management offices of the affected buildings to finalise a plan to replace that section of pipe and carry out the work as soon as possible.
