Over 1,500 motorcycle riders killed or injured in first nine months of 2026
More than 1,500 motorcycle riders were injured or killed in Hong Kong traffic accidents in the first nine months of 2026, with 15 deaths, the Transport Department said. The department urged riders to wear proper helmets and high-visibility clothing, and to avoid blind spots and mobile phones.
More than 1,500 motorcycle riders were injured or killed in traffic accidents in Hong Kong in the first three quarters of this year, with 15 fatalities, the Transport Department has said. The number of deaths exceeded that recorded in the same period last year, according to the department.
In a recent social media post, the Transport Department highlighted the vulnerability of motorcycle riders and emphasised the importance of wearing appropriate, properly fitted helmets. The department also recommended that riders wear light-coloured, fluorescent or reflective clothing to increase their visibility to other road users.
Riders were reminded to keep headlights and taillights on at all times while on the road. The Transport Department further advised riders to maintain a driving position that ensures clear visibility to other motorists and pedestrians, avoid the blind spots of large vehicles, and refrain from using mobile phones or headphones while riding.
Additional safety measures include limiting passengers. Unless a sidecar is present, only one passenger is allowed, and that passenger must wear a properly fitted helmet and sit astride the seat. The department also warned that children under the age of eight should not be carried on motorcycles.
