Malaysian percussion ensemble to perform gamelan concert in Hong Kong
A top Malaysian percussion ensemble will perform "Tales of Copper and Drums" at Sha Tin Town Hall on 6-7 November, featuring over 30 gamelan instruments, lion drums and seasonal drums. The event is part of the sixth Greater Bay Area Cultural Arts Festival and the "Asia Plus" festival.
Malaysia's leading percussion ensemble will present "Tales of Copper and Drums" (Tong Hua Gu Shi) at Sha Tin Town Hall on 6 and 7 November at 8 pm, showcasing the unique appeal of gamelan music. Gamelan, meaning "to strike" in Javanese, originated in the courts and temples of Java and Bali over a millennium ago and is regarded as a world music treasure.
The performance will bring together more than 30 of the most representative gamelan instruments, including metallophones, gongs and drum sets, interweaving with lion drums and seasonal drums. It will be accompanied by the古朴 graceful Mak Yong dance and songs. The Hong Kong Children's Choir (Youth Choir) will join in singing a series of pieces, including a new rendition of the classic folk song "Jasmine Flower", allowing familiar melodies to travel through different Southeast Asian cultures.
Tickets, priced at HK$200, $260, $320 and $400, are available via Cityline (www.urbtix.hk), phone at 3166 1288 or the URBTIX mobile app. Some $200 tickets are for restricted-view seats. The 6 November show will include a post-performance artist talk, with other extension activities such as demonstration workshops and outreach performances.
The concert is part of the sixth Greater Bay Area Cultural Arts Festival, and also belongs to the "Asia Plus" arts festival presented by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Held annually from September to November, this year's Asia Plus festival gathers more than 30 countries and regions under the theme "Reinterpreting Arts", offering over 100 performances and activities that showcase the artistic essence of Asia and Belt and Road nations.
