Hong Kong's cultural programmes and exhibitions are being showcased at the sixth Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cultural Arts Festival, which opened in Shenzhen on 31 October 2026.
Deputy Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Liu Zhen said at the opening ceremony that Hong Kong this year published its first five-year plan, which aims to deepen the development of the Greater Bay Area and leverage its advantages in connecting internally and externally to make the region a world-class bay area. Liu said cultural exchange is an important way to promote such connectivity.
The festival's organising committee was formally established this year, marking a new stage in its development, Liu added. He said the committee would work to enhance the festival's influence and fully demonstrate the cultural fusion and charm of the Greater Bay Area.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) is jointly presenting three signature programmes with cultural institutions from the Greater Bay Area. The first two are funded by the National Arts Fund. They include “Music and Dance Beyond Boundaries – Hong Kong Chapter”, co-produced by the LCSD and Guangzhou Xinghai Concert Hall, with Hong Kong cross-media artist Tsang Man-tung as artistic director. The musical “Yuliang”, by the Acting Gang in Shenzhen, depicts the legendary life of Chinese female Western-style painter Pan Yuliang. Also in Shenzhen, Tang Shu-wing Theatre Studio is staging the monodrama “One Free Hour”, a poetic exploration of life choices.
The LCSD is also supporting several Hong Kong performing groups, including the Hong Kong String Orchestra and Hong Kong Tian Lai Dunhuang Chinese Orchestra, in touring cities across the Greater Bay Area during the festival. An exhibition titled “75 Years of Cinema: Silver Images – Film Stills and Posters of Yinhua (Qianhai Station)”, jointly organised by the Hong Kong Film Archive, the Shenzhen Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Services Industrial Park Authority and Yinhua Institution, is also on display.
In Hong Kong, the LCSD is presenting a diverse range of programmes and activities. Visiting performances include “Copper Talk Drum Story” by Malaysia's top percussion group Hands Percussion with Indonesia's Bali Gamelan Orchestra, the contemporary circus theatre “Circle” by Vietnam's Moon Production, and the multimedia dance programme “Spirit” by Italian troupe fuse*. Free large-scale events such as “Cantonese Opera Day 2026”, “Asian Ethnic Arts +” and “Hong Kong Museum Festival 2026”, as well as ongoing exhibitions at LCSD museums, are open to the public.
