Law Society ends emergency legal support for Wang Fuk Court fire victims

The Law Society of Hong Kong has concluded its emergency legal services for those affected by the Wang Fuk Court fire, with the helpline and service counters ending operations at the end of August, according to society president Roden Tong.

Writing in a column published on 9 October, Tong said the initial response, which began in April, addressed immediate needs such as personal injuries, important documents, insurance and succession. As recovery progressed, the assistance evolved to cover long-term housing arrangements, property acquisition, conveyancing, probate and mortgages.

Beyond the helpline and seven service counters, the society engaged with affected residents, Legislative Council members and government departments. It met with the Legal Aid Department to discuss legal aid matters and arranged briefings by the Housing Department and the Housing Bureau following the government's announcement of long-term housing arrangements for Wang Fuk Court.

Over the course of the operation, 669 volunteer solicitors and 503 volunteer support personnel handled more than 620 cases. Tong expressed gratitude to all volunteers, noting that many gave their time alongside professional, academic and family commitments.

Tong described the conclusion as a moment for gratitude and reflection rather than celebration, stating that the support helped ensure the law brought clarity and hope to the affected community.
