Hong Kong's newly developed Huanggang Port is handling more than 86,000 daily border crossings on weekdays, more than double the average daily traffic previously recorded at the Lok Ma Chau Control Point, Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung said on 4 November.
On weekends and public holidays, the average daily passenger traffic has reached nearly 140,000, Tang added. Despite the sharp increase, he said the port's overall operation has remained smooth and orderly, with clearance efficiency meeting expectations.
“Passengers using the 'collaborative inspection' automated channels wait for no more than five minutes most of the time,” Tang said. During peak hours, the Immigration Department opens all automated channels and traditional counters ahead of schedule to manage passenger flow, keeping the average waiting time to less than 15 minutes, he added.
To assist passengers unfamiliar with the new clearance system, the Immigration Department has deployed additional manpower, according to Tang.
Tang also said arrangements have been made for the passenger arrival and departure halls that will connect to the Northern Link (NOL) Spur Line, which will link directly to Huanggang Port in the future. The spur line will connect the metro networks of Hong Kong and Shenzhen under the co-location arrangement.
The project's schedule has been brought forward by two years, Tang noted, meaning the NOL Spur Line is now on track to open concurrently with the NOL Main Line by 2034.
