Hong Kong to boost Greater Bay Area industrial ties with Guangdong and Shenzhen

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said the city will actively promote coordinated new industrial development in the Greater Bay Area, as he unveiled plans to work with Guangdong province on a joint action plan and with Shenzhen on building innovation platforms under the principles of “cooperative research and development, coordinated transformation, and shared development”.

Speaking via video at the opening ceremony of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum on 1 November, Lee said Hong Kong is leveraging the advantages of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Park in the Lok Ma Chau area, which features “one river, two banks” and “one zone, two parks”. He noted the Hong Kong section of the park now hosts over 120 technology firms and research institutions, and will work with the adjacent New Territories Science City to form an integrated upstream-to-downstream development cluster that links with industrial supply chains across the Greater Bay Area.

Lee highlighted that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region brings together innovation from nine mainland cities plus Hong Kong and Macao, with strong capabilities in scientific research, technology transfer, and commercialisation. The region is home to some of the world’s top universities and research institutions, as well as a vibrant high-tech enterprise sector, he said.

He pointed to the “Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou” innovation cluster, which has been ranked number one globally for two consecutive years, as evidence of the significant benefits of coordinated innovation in the Greater Bay Area. Lee said this synergy can provide a continuous source of momentum for China’s drive to become a science and technology powerhouse.
