Hong Kong to Support HKUST Medical School with Kwoon Tak Hospital as Interim Teaching Site

Hong Kong's Medical and Health Bureau has announced that the Hospital Authority will provide teaching and research support to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as it prepares to establish the city's third medical school.

According to the bureau, HKUST will use Kwoon Tak Hospital as its main interim teaching hospital. The Hospital Authority and HKUST have established a multi-level cooperation and communication mechanism to balance the hospital's daily operations and public healthcare services while supporting the university's medical education and research.

The preparatory working group for the new medical school held its fifth meeting, during which HKUST reported on its progress. The bureau stated that until the permanent campus in the Northern New Territories is completed, HKUST will use the Medical Teaching and Research Complex on its Clear Water Bay campus as the primary teaching and research facility.

Dr. Lo Chung-mau, Secretary for Health and co-chair of the working group, said HKUST and the Hospital Authority are finalising the cooperative arrangement to use Kwoon Tak Hospital as the interim teaching hospital. He noted that the framework for clinical teaching and research support is gradually being put in place, and that HKUST is accelerating the recruitment of academic staff, with the design of the medical curriculum and academic structure largely taking shape.

Co-chair and Secretary for Education Dr. Choi Yuk-lin said the government will continue to fully support HKUST's efforts to establish the new medical school within the New San Tin University Town campus area. She added that the new medical school will further strengthen Hong Kong's competitive advantage in international higher education and medical training, attracting more outstanding students, faculty and research projects to the city.
