Hong Kong's trade office in Brussels promoted local fantasy cinema at the San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Film Festival on 1 November. The event included screenings of four films and a roundtable discussion on the evolution of Hong Kong cinema.
The Hong Kong film programme featured two new works, A Step into the Past and Rush: Explosive Showdown, alongside two classics, Brain Devil and Hard Boiled. The selection showcased the diversity of Hong Kong cinema, covering supernatural themes and the action films for which the city is renowned, offering European audiences insight into both traditional characteristics and contemporary creations.
Hong Kong's Representative to the European Union, Weng Peiwen, addressed a Hong Kong reception at the festival on 1 November (San Sebastian time). She highlighted Hong Kong's rich film tradition and contemporary creative vitality. Weng noted that the Hong Kong government has supported the film industry through measures such as the Film Development Fund, and welcomed European film professionals to visit Hong Kong for the annual Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART) in March, to explore new opportunities for international collaboration.
Based on the four selected Hong Kong films, the trade office also organised a roundtable on the same day, bringing together film experts and industry figures to discuss the heritage and development of Hong Kong cinema over the decades.
Founded in 1990, the San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Film Festival has grown into a major film and cultural event in the region, attracting more than 20,000 participants each year. This year's festival will screen 32 films, 33 short films and six television series.
