Hong Kong parking meter system fault: no enforcement until repairs completed

Hong Kong's parking meter system suffered a failure on Tuesday 3 November, the Transport Department reported after receiving a notification from the operator. The system is undergoing emergency repairs.

Transport and Logistics Bureau Minister Mabel Chen said the bureau attaches great importance to the incident and has instructed the Transport Department to require the operator, Hong Kong Telecommunications, to submit a report as soon as possible. Initial assessments suggest the fault was not caused by malicious interference.

Chen acknowledged public concern about how vehicles parked at affected spaces would be treated. She said the bureau has contacted the police, who will not issue tickets for roadside parking violations until the system is fully restored.

The minister added that the operator is expected to submit a preliminary report within 24 hours. The bureau will also review the incident with relevant departments to prevent a recurrence.
