Hong Kong official inspects border checkpoints, urges smooth travel during peak periods
Hong Kong's Chief Secretary Eric Chan inspected Shenzhen Bay and Huanggang checkpoints on 25 October, directing the Security Bureau to ensure safe and orderly operations. He called for early crowd forecasting, additional counters, and coordinated transport to manage peak travel flows.
Hong Kong's Chief Secretary for Administration, Eric Chan, inspected the Shenzhen Bay and Huanggang checkpoints on 25 October, directing the Security Bureau to maintain safe, efficient and orderly operations at the border crossings. Chan emphasised the need for proactive planning and passenger flow forecasting, urging authorities to open additional inspection counters and vehicle lanes before peaks in pedestrian and vehicular traffic to ease congestion.
Chan also instructed the Transport and Logistics Bureau to coordinate closely with public transport operators, ensuring they reserve sufficient vehicles and staff to flexibly adjust services according to passenger volume. This aims to meet the travel needs of cross-border passengers, he said in a social media post.
The Chief Secretary made the visit after completing a trip to Dongguan earlier in the day. He called on various government departments to maintain close coordination, adapting to passenger flow characteristics on different days and times to manage immigration clearance and safety effectively.
Chan noted that major events and festive activities are injecting momentum into Hong Kong, but are also causing shifts in cross-border travel and clearance patterns. He urged travellers to plan their journeys in advance and travel during off-peak hours, and suggested that those attending events consider staying overnight in Hong Kong for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.
