Hong Kong offers trusted business environment for China opportunities: finance chief
Hong Kong's finance chief said the city provides a trusted business environment for global investors to tap China's growth, citing its common law system, capital flows and international networks under "one country, two systems".
Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Paul Chan on Wednesday said the city provides a trusted and familiar business environment for global investors to participate in China's huge growth opportunities under the "one country, two systems" framework.
Speaking at the International Financial Leaders Investment Summit, Chan said Hong Kong is closely connected with mainland China, with its common law system, free capital flows and international networks.
The city brings together venture capital, private equity, family offices and asset management, he said. With a deep and mature stock market, Hong Kong's mission is to further connect these markets more closely.
Chan said Hong Kong has a vibrant venture capital and private equity ecosystem, managing about US$250 billion in related assets, ranking second in Asia behind only mainland China. He also noted that "patient capital" is becoming increasingly important.
On gold and commodities, Chan said the goal is to broaden allocation choices, supported by suitable tools to manage risk and liquidity, helping create long-term value. Whether through diversified forms of capital to support enterprises or helping investors diversify allocations, it is all based on a trusted market, he said.
Chan said Hong Kong will continue to expand financing and asset allocation, ensuring enterprises can access needed capital at various stages of development and allowing investors to participate in the growth of China and Asia through various asset classes and markets.
