Hong Kong lifts found missing door frames in 39 private buildings

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has discovered that lifts installed by Tai Yau Elevator (HK) Ltd in 39 private buildings across Hong Kong are missing door frame components, the department said on 16 October 2026.

The finding follows earlier reports that 48 lifts in Kwun Tong's Tsui Ping North Estate and Sha Tin's Pok Hong Estate, all handled by Tai Yau and reported as having completed replacement works, were found to have only fire-resistant doors installed without door frame components.

The EMSD said it has launched inspections of all lifts installed by Tai Yau. As of 2 pm on the day of the announcement, the department had inspected 39 buildings, including one within a housing estate and 38 standalone buildings. Random checks found that all these buildings had lifts without door frame components.

In response to inquiries, the EMSD said that because all the buildings involved are private properties, it will not disclose the names of the estates or buildings to respect private ownership and the wishes of owners. The department said it will contact the relevant property management companies to notify owners and will urge the contractor to install the missing door frame components as soon as possible.

The EMSD has also begun inspecting lift works by other registered contractors. So far, it has checked 25 buildings and found that all lifts in those buildings had door frame components installed.
