Hong Kong leader hails athletes' record success at Asian Para Games
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee congratulated the city's team for winning 41 medals at the 5th Asian Para Games in 2026, including a record haul in lawn bowls. He pledged continued government support for disabled sports.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee on 24 October congratulated the city's athletes on their outstanding performance at the 5th Asian Para Games, where the Chinese Hong Kong team won 41 medals — three gold, 14 silver and 24 bronze. Lee highlighted the lawn bowls team's best-ever result of two gold, three silver and three bronze medals, describing the achievement as a 'glorious chapter' for disabled sports in Hong Kong.
'The athletes fought with all their might on the field, demonstrating superb skills and indomitable spirit. They not only brought glory to Hong Kong but also conveyed a message of perseverance and never giving up,' Lee said in a statement. He added that their performances had earned the admiration and pride of all Hong Kong residents.
The Chief Executive reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting disabled sports, noting that the Hong Kong Sports Institute provides full-time elite training, barrier-free world-class facilities and professional coaching for disabled athletes. From 1 April 2025, the government increased direct subsidies for elite disabled athletes and introduced a new 'adult team' funding tier alongside the existing elite level, creating a clearer development pathway.
'The outstanding results at this Asian Para Games show that our policy direction is correct,' Lee stated. He thanked all athletes, coaches, medical teams and support staff for their dedication and hard work.
The government will continue to collaborate closely with the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee, the Hong Kong Sports Institute and various sports federations to invest in talent development and help more disabled athletes reach new heights in future international competitions.
