Hong Kong can mobilise capital across currencies for green development: John Lee
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said the city can mobilise capital across multiple currencies to support green development, citing a recent digital green bond issuance. He announced a "Green Technology Bridgehead Plan" next year and a super-charging demonstration station in 2027.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said the city is capable of mobilising capital across multiple currencies to support green development, speaking at the Belt and Road Green Innovation Conference held in Hong Kong on 26 October 2026.
Lee said green transformation requires joint efforts from all parties, and multilateral cooperation can achieve greater results than unilateral action by pooling resources, expertise and innovative ideas. He described Hong Kong as a leading green and sustainable finance centre that can connect green projects with international capital and combine green finance with financial innovation.
Citing the recent issuance of a new batch of digital green bonds denominated in Hong Kong dollars, renminbi, US dollars and euros by the SAR government last month, Lee said this demonstrates Hong Kong's ability to mobilise capital across currencies to support green development. He gave an example that Hong Kong can bring together mainland equipment suppliers, Southeast Asian developers and Middle Eastern investors for solar projects, and can raise funds, arrange investment and manage risks for all parties.
The SAR government will launch a "Green Technology Bridgehead Plan" next year, Lee said. The plan will support green enterprises from the mainland and overseas in bringing green solutions to Belt and Road markets and integrating technology into local needs. It will also help green enterprises in Belt and Road regions use Hong Kong as a springboard to expand into overseas markets.
Lee also noted that the SAR government is working with the National Energy Administration to build Hong Kong's first "Super Charging Technology Demonstration Station", targeting completion next year. The station will showcase technology compatible with both national and European charging standards and play a role in a wide range of markets.
