Hong Kong lawmaker suggests tourism management for East Dam after trial booking system
Hong Kong lawmaker Yiu Pak-ling proposes introducing tourism area management at East Dam, suggesting premium services and improved facilities after a trial booking system at Po Pin Island section ends. The government will review the system for long-term rural management.
A lawmaker has proposed introducing tourism area management concepts at the East Dam of the Sai Kung reservoir, following a trial booking system for the Po Pin Island section of the Wan Yi Geological Trail. The proposal comes as the government reviews the system to develop long-term rural park management strategies.
Election Committee sector lawmaker Yiu Pak-ling told RTHK programme "Political Perspectives" that the trial booking system, announced in the Policy Address, had resulted in fewer visitors during peak holiday periods compared to previous years, with smoother traffic flow. Yiu noted that many short-haul mainland Chinese tourists visited the Po Pin Island section, and that poor weather often led to cancellations. Since the booking system was free, he said, there was no cost for non-attendance.
Yiu suggested that the government could consider adopting tourism area management concepts for the East Dam in its review of the booking system. He recommended enhancing facilities and integrating the Po Pin Island section booking system with value-added services such as transport and guided tours to improve the overall visitor experience.
The government will summarise the trial's outcomes and formulate long-term rural management strategies based on the experience gained from the booking system.
