Hong Kong EMSD releases latest Legionella test results for cooling towers
Hong Kong's Electrical and Mechanical Services Department published updated Legionella bacteria test results for fresh water cooling towers, along with locations of towers that received nuisance notices for exceeding bacteria limits over the past three months.
The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has released the latest sampling test results for Legionella bacteria in fresh water cooling towers.
The department also disclosed the locations of buildings where cooling towers had received a “nuisance notice” over the past three months because the total concentration of Legionella bacteria was found to be equal to or above the upper limit. Details are provided in an annex to the announcement.
EMSD said it updates the information on its website every half month. The data can be found at www.emsd.gov.hk/tc/other_regulatory_services/cooling_towers/water_sampling/index.html.
The department reminded owners of fresh water cooling towers that they are responsible for the proper design, operation and maintenance of the towers. Owners should follow the department’s Code of Practice for Fresh Water Cooling Towers, conduct regular inspections and timely repairs, and test water quality periodically to prevent the growth of Legionella bacteria.
The announcement was issued on 6 November 2026 at 12:00 Hong Kong time.
