The Hong Kong Cyclothon, organised by the Tourism Board, will be held on 11 October. For the first time, the non-competitive 56km category will feature a 'five tunnels, three bridges' route, including a new section of the Central Kowloon Bypass. The 32km category will continue to pass through a 'two tunnels, two bridges' section.
The race route covers major roads including Ngan Shing Road, West Kowloon Highway, Cheung Tsing Tunnel, Tsing Ma Bridge, Ting Kau Bridge, Nam Wan Tunnel, Stonecutters Bridge, Shek Shan Tunnel, Shatin Hills Tunnel and the Central Kowloon Bypass (Yau Ma Tei section). Multiple sections will be closed in phases.
Senior Inspector Tam Kin-heung of the Western Kowloon Regional Traffic Division's Enforcement and Control Unit said the main road closures will begin at 1am on Sunday and last until about 1pm the same day, when roads will reopen. From 1am on Sunday, the southbound West Kowloon Highway and associated slip roads will close first, including a series of slip roads from the Yau Ma Tei Interchange to the Central Kowloon Bypass. At 7am, both tubes of the Central Kowloon Bypass will also close.
During the event, sections including the upper level of the Lantau Link towards Kowloon, Shek Shan Tunnel towards Shatin, Shatin Hills Tunnel towards Shatin, Ting Kau Bridge towards Kowloon, Cheung Tsing Tunnel towards Kowloon, the southbound Tsing Kwu Highway and Stonecutters Bridge towards Kowloon will be closed. A series of traffic diversions will be implemented in the Yau Tsim area. All car parks within the West Kowloon Cultural District will be temporarily closed, while cross-harbour tunnels will remain open.
A total of 120 franchised bus routes and seven minibus routes will be diverted, shortened or relocated in phases until roads reopen. The police urged participants to use public transport or shuttle buses arranged by the organiser. Drivers were advised to avoid the affected roads, and any illegally parked vehicles would be towed away immediately.
