Xi calls for multilateralism and free trade in meeting with Austrian chancellor

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Austrian Chancellor Stocker, who is on an official visit to China, in Beijing on Friday 6 November.

Xi said the current international situation is marked by chaos and interwoven challenges, with unilateralism and protectionism on the rise. He called on both countries to jointly uphold genuine multilateralism and support free trade, contributing to a more just and reasonable global governance system.

The Chinese president stressed that “a continuously developing and growing China is not the root of problems facing Europe, but a partner and companion that can help Europe solve problems.” Xi said China and Europe should focus on areas of cooperation, and resolve economic and trade frictions through dialogue and consultation, achieving mutual benefit and common development.

According to the Chinese side, Stocker said Austria-China relations are developing well, and he is willing to comprehensively strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, technology and innovation, as well as promote cultural and tourism exchanges, to bring bilateral ties to new levels based on years of cooperation and trust.

Stocker emphasised that Austria actively supports the development of EU-China relations, and hopes to resolve economic and trade differences through candid dialogue and consultation. He said Austria is willing to work with China to uphold multilateralism, strengthen multilateral coordination, promote sustainable development, and tackle challenges such as climate change, to maintain global prosperity and stability.
