China, Iceland pledge deeper ties as foreign ministers meet in Beijing

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing with Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, state media reported on 30 October.

Wang, a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, said the success of China-Iceland relations lay in adhering to the principle that all countries, big and small, are equal. He said the two sides should respect each other's independently chosen development paths and pursue win-win cooperation based on mutual trust.

China was willing to share development opportunities with Iceland and explore cooperation potential, Wang said. He called for strengthening collaboration in trade, the marine sector, tourism, joint scientific research and talent cultivation. Amid the current turbulent international situation, Wang added, the two sides should step up coordination to jointly uphold multilateralism, international rule of law and the central role of the United Nations in international affairs.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Gunnarsdóttir congratulated the Chinese Communist Party on its recently concluded 20th Fifth Plenary Session. She said China's success was also of great significance to the world.

Iceland highly valued its ties with China, Gunnarsdóttir said, and understood and respected China's position on safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity. She reaffirmed that Iceland would continue to adhere to the One-China policy.
