Wang Yi says US and China can and must manage AI together
Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi told US officials that both countries, as leading AI nations, have the ability and responsibility to develop and govern artificial intelligence together. He called for global rules to ensure AI benefits people and remains under human control.
Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi has said the United States and China, as the two leading nations in artificial intelligence, have both the ability and the responsibility to develop and manage the technology together. He made the remarks during a meeting with US representatives attending the 2026 Global Governance Forum in the Xiong'an New Area in Hebei province.
Wang, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, said the world faces multiple governance deficits in peace, development and security. China held the Global Governance Forum in Xiong'an, he said, in the hope of building consensus and jointly pushing forward reform of the global governance system.
Beijing advocates an inclusive, beneficial and ethical approach to artificial intelligence, Wang said. As the two countries in the top tier of AI development, the US and China are capable of and responsible for both developing and governing AI well, he added.
Wang stressed that AI development must remain under human control and serve the public good. He called on all sides not only to guard against risks but also to cooperate in drawing up globally applicable rules and standards. Such rules, he said, would allow AI to promote shared prosperity and maintain common security.
