An 11-year-old girl's tearful plea for help in viral videos prompted a Hong Kong police investigation. Officers arrested her 61-year-old grandmother and a 43-year-old Indonesian domestic helper on child ill-treatment charges. The girl was hospitalised with swelling and bruising.
Hong Kong police have arrested a 61-year-old grandmother and a 43-year-old Indonesian domestic helper in Wong Tai Sin on charges of ill-treatment or neglect of a child, following the viral spread of videos showing an 11-year-old girl tearfully pleading for help while being verbally abused by family members. The girl was hospitalised with swelling and bruising on her limbs.
The investigation began after two harrowing video clips circulated widely on social media. In the first clip, the visibly terrified schoolgirl recorded herself inside a closed room, whispering a desperate call for help as loud, aggressive banging and shouting came from outside. In a second clip, a middle-aged man was captured furiously slamming a table and hurling profane insults at her over school-related issues while she sobbed in fear.
Alarmed by the distress footage, netizens identified the girl's primary school in Wong Tai Sin and alerted both school authorities and law enforcement. The police received a referral from the Social Welfare Department regarding suspected child mistreatment. Officers located the girl, who was conscious but suffering from red swelling on her arms and legs. She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital before being transferred to the Hong Kong Children's Hospital for further medical treatment.
Following preliminary inquiries, officers from the Wong Tai Sin District Criminal Investigation Team arrested the girl's maternal grandmother and the domestic helper. Both suspects remain in police custody for questioning. Authorities confirmed that further arrests have not been ruled out as the investigation continues.
