A 39-year-old woman was hospitalised after a heavy glass exit door fell on her head at Butterfly Plaza in Tuen Mun on Friday evening. Police classified it as an accident. The mall's manager said routine inspections found no issues, but CCTV showed the door was pushed with force before failing.

Woman hospitalised after glass door falls at Tuen Mun mall

A 39-year-old woman was taken to hospital on Friday evening after a heavy glass exit door detached from its frame and struck her on the head at Butterfly Plaza in Tuen Mun. The incident happened at about 6pm as the victim was preparing to leave the shopping centre.

Despite the impact, the woman remained conscious and was taken by ambulance to Tuen Mun Hospital for treatment. Images on social media showed security staff cordoning off the exit with warning tape, while the large glass panel lay flat across the busy walkway. Police classified the incident as an accidental injury after an initial inquiry.

Link Asset Management Limited, the real estate investment trust that manages the mall, said in a statement it was deeply concerned. Mall staff immediately went to the scene to help the victim and coordinate with emergency services. A corporate representative has been appointed to keep in contact with the injured shopper and offer assistance during her recovery.

The management company said the glass doors undergo routine safety inspections every evening after the mall closes. The most recent inspection was completed on Thursday 22 October, during which staff recorded no operational issues, structural damage or mechanical abnormalities.

Initial reviews of the property's closed-circuit television footage showed the glass door had been pushed open with considerable force immediately before it detached from its hinges. The management team said a technical investigation is still under way to determine the exact mechanical cause of the failure.

To prevent similar accidents, the management has sealed off the exit and ordered an immediate, comprehensive safety inspection of every glass door and support bracket across Butterfly Plaza to ensure structural integrity.
