Tropical Cyclone Jongdari hits Taiwan, killing one and injuring over 520

Tropical Cyclone Jongdari swept across Taiwan, leaving at least one person dead and more than 520 injured, most with minor abrasions, authorities said. The storm caused widespread damage including fallen roadside trees, downed power lines, damaged water pipes and other public infrastructure, as well as toppled advertising billboards and torn-off building roofing sheets.

Injuries were concentrated in Taipei, Taichung, Changhua County, Kaohsiung City, Tainan City and Yilan County, according to officials. Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) said that as of 3pm local time, more than 340,000 households across the island had lost electricity at the peak of the storm. More than 90 per cent of those had been restored, with over 15,000 repair workers mobilised during the cyclone.

Taipower stated it would continue to coordinate with relevant agencies. If fallen trees or roadblocks hindered repairs, or if landslides affected the passage of engineering vehicles, it would immediately request assistance to clear obstacles and improve repair efficiency.

Taiwan's Water Works Company said it had prepared more than 570 generators on standby to maintain high water levels in clear-water reservoirs and distribution tanks. It also said it would clear water intakes, replenish water treatment chemicals and adjust water sources from different regions to ensure overall water supply safety.
