THEi clears three programme reviews in push to become applied sciences university
The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong has passed accreditation for three programme areas, moving closer to becoming a University of Applied Sciences. The approvals cover Computer Science, Sports and Recreation Management, and Built Environment, with the latest granted in May.
The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) has cleared accreditation for three programme areas, advancing its bid to become Hong Kong's next University of Applied Sciences.
The most recent approval, granted in May, covers "Computer Science and Information Technology." Two other programme areas — "Sports and Recreation Management" and "Built Environment" — passed review last year.
President Alan Lau Kin-tak said designing the three subject areas was challenging, as learning in applied science goes beyond textbooks. Sports science, for instance, requires dedicated rooms to assess athletes' physical conditions, a departure from traditional teaching methods, he noted.
Lau acknowledged that many of THEi's courses were launched at industry request, reflecting the institute's close ties with business. He added that THEi will monitor talent demand over the next three to seven years to shape its training focus.
To give students deeper insight into real-world applications, THEi previously announced plans for a new campus in Tai Koo, which will include an immersive experience room featuring three large screens that simulate different scenarios.
The institute said it will continue working closely with authorities toward upgrading to a University of Applied Sciences.
