The grieving son of an 88-year-old man who died after a fall while boarding a green minibus in Wong Tai Sin has launched an urgent appeal for witnesses, saying public testimony could help his family secure justice.
Police have arrested the 69-year-old minibus driver, surnamed Wong, on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. The victim, surnamed Yau, died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital six days after the boarding accident.
The incident happened at about 4.35pm when Yau attempted to board public light bus route 72 outside Tsui Chuk Commercial Centre along Chuk Yuen Road. He lost his balance and fell heavily, sustaining visible injuries to his head and legs.
Paramedics found the elderly man conscious at the scene and took him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for urgent treatment. However, his condition deteriorated over the following days, and he was pronounced dead on Thursday night at 9.21pm.
In a social media post following his father's death, the son described his father as having been in good health before the accident. He urged anyone who saw the fall to contact police or come forward with information, saying establishing exactly what happened during the boarding process was vital.
The Special Investigation Team of Traffic Kowloon East has taken over the case. Investigators are examining vehicle data, reviewing nearby surveillance footage, and reconstructing the sequence of events leading to the fatal fall. The driver remains in police custody for questioning.
