North District Marathon organiser plans cooler-weather second edition
Heung Yee Kuk chairman Lau Yap Keung says next North District Marathon could run to Yuen Long, New田科技城 or Shenzhen, and be held in cooler months from December to February.
The North District Marathon, organised by the Heung Yee Kuk, was held on 1 November, featuring full marathon, half marathon, 10-kilometre and 1,600-metre races, with about 15,000 participants.
Heung Yee Kuk chairman Lau Yap Keung said the most central areas of the North District are San Tin Tech City and the Lok Ma Chau loop. He indicated that future editions might consider planning running routes to Yuen Long, San Tin Tech City, or even Shenzhen.
Responding to runners who said November weather is not suitable for a marathon, Lau said the organiser would consider holding the marathon again in cooler months from December to February, when the weather is cooler and there are no typhoons, and temperatures are more suitable for running.
Lau also said planning the race course faced many challenges, including balancing road closures with residents' travel needs. He noted that more than 30 meetings were held with government departments to coordinate, and he thanked all parties for their assistance.
