A 55-year-old mainland Chinese woman was arrested at the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line control point on Wednesday on suspicion of attempting to smuggle a live dog into Hong Kong inside her luggage.

Customs officers intercepted the incoming traveler in the passenger arrivals hall for inspection and discovered a live dog, valued at approximately HK$15,000, concealed within her personal baggage.

The woman was arrested on the spot, and customs authorities subsequently handed the case over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for further investigation.

Under the Rabies Regulation, the illegal importation of animals, animal carcasses, or animal products is an offense punishable by a maximum fine of HK$50,000 and up to one year of imprisonment upon conviction.
