Mainland traveller jailed for possessing 516 untaxed cigarettes
A 26-year-old mainland Chinese man was sentenced to prison for possessing 516 untaxed cigarettes worth HK$2,600 at the Lok Ma Chau Control Point. Customs welcomed the sentence as a deterrent, noting even first-time offenders may face imprisonment.
Customs officers intercepted a 26-year-old male traveller from mainland China at the Lok Ma Chau Control Point on 28 October and seized 516 untaxed cigarettes from his personal luggage. The cigarettes had an estimated market value of about HK$2,600 and a dutiable value of about HK$1,700. The man was immediately arrested.
Hong Kong Customs welcomed the sentence, saying it reflects that even first-time offenders can face imprisonment. The penalty is deterrent and reflects the seriousness of the offence, and the public should not take chances, Customs said.
According to the Ordinance, cigarettes are dutiable goods. Anyone who imports, handles, possesses, sells or purchases illicit cigarettes commits an offence. Upon conviction, the maximum penalty is a fine of HK$2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
Customs reminded the public to report suspected illicit cigarette activities via the 24-hour hotline 182 8080, the dedicated email account [email protected], or the online form at eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002.
