Legislative Council congratulates Hong Kong athletes on record medal haul at Nagoya Asian Games

Legislative Council President Andrew Yao has congratulated Hong Kong athletes and their teams on their record-breaking performance at the Nagoya Asian Games, which closed today. The Hong Kong contingent won 54 medals in total – 11 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze – surpassing previous records for both gold medals and overall medal count.

In a social media post, Yao said the people of Hong Kong had deeply felt the athletes' drive and indomitable spirit. He noted that the recent string of successes across international events reflected years of groundwork by sports associations and industry figures, ensuring the continuity of Hong Kong's sporting excellence.

Yao stressed that sustainable development of sport requires long-term policy support and broad societal backing. He affirmed that the Legislative Council, as a steadfast partner of the SAR government in reform and innovation, will continue to work alongside the government and the sports community to implement the long-term directions set out in Hong Kong's first five-year plan, optimise the overall sports infrastructure layout, enhance the governance capacity of sports associations, and raise professional standards across the sector.
