Kai Tak Hospital began phased operations on Monday 5 October, with the Comprehensive Family Medicine Centre on the first floor of the Specialist Outpatient Building opening first. The centre initially offers about 350 family medicine consultation slots per day.
Dr Cheung Fu-hing, cluster chief executive of the Kowloon Central Hospital Cluster and hospital chief executive of Kai Tak Hospital, said the first morning of operations ran largely smoothly. He noted that one or two patients mistakenly came to Kai Tak Hospital for blood tests – the hospital handled these cases on its own discretion and provided the service. The hospital has deployed dozens of service ambassadors to answer questions from members of the public.
Dr Cheung added that from 26 October, specialist outpatient services will be introduced in phases. Some existing patients in surgery, neurosurgery and clinical oncology will be the first to transfer to Kai Tak Hospital for treatment. The hospital expects around 500 patient follow-up visits per day at that stage. From mid-November, services will be expanded to include internal medicine, and by the end of the year the number of daily follow-up visits is forecast to rise to 1,800.
Dr Cheung said the hospital will in due course increase resources to expand family medicine clinic services through annual plans. It will also boost medical and nursing staff levels in response to the demand generated by the new specialist outpatient services.
