Hong Kong waste facility I.PARK1 resumes operations after fire
Hong Kong's Environmental Protection Department says the integrated waste management facility I.PARK1 has gradually resumed operations from 30 October after a fire on 26 October. Waste diverted to the New Territories West landfill during the suspension is now being accepted again.
Hong Kong's Environmental Protection Department (EPD) announced that the Integrated Waste Management Facility Phase 1 (I.PARK1) has gradually resumed operations from 30 October, after a fire on 26 October temporarily halted waste reception.
The EPD said it suspended waste acceptance at I.PARK1 following the fire incident on 26 October. During the suspension, waste originally destined for I.PARK1 was diverted to the New Territories West landfill for disposal. The department noted that overall waste management operations in Hong Kong remained normal throughout the period.
After conducting comprehensive checks on all major systems of the facility's first and second modules, the EPD confirmed they were safe and suitable for restarting and operation. The two modules began gradually resuming operations from 30 October, with ongoing system testing and trial operation phases continuing.
The facility has now resumed waste reception. The EPD said the fire occurred in the area of the third module, which remains under assessment. The department is evaluating the extent of damage and its impact on the facility, and will urge the contractor to promptly develop repair plans and carry out restoration work.
