Hong Kong universities urged to collaborate globally on AI challenges
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology president Nancy Ip says higher education must cooperate across borders to solve global challenges. She highlights Hong Kong's unique role as a hub for diverse perspectives and innovation, particularly in the age of artificial intelligence.
University of Science and Technology (HKUST) President Nancy Ip said the higher education sector must increase communication and collaboration to find innovative solutions for major global challenges that transcend borders. She made the remarks after attending the World Top University Presidents' Forum in Hong Kong on 4 November.
Ip noted that Hong Kong is highly international and diverse, and is the only city in the world with five universities among the global top 100. "As a交汇点 between East and West, and a global centre for education, research and innovation, Hong Kong has always been a place where diverse perspectives converge and ideas are turned into results," she said in a speech at the forum.
About 50 university presidents or representatives from around the world participated in the forum, Ip said. The aim is to promote cross-regional and cross-disciplinary cooperation, explore innovative directions for higher education in the age of artificial intelligence, and drive sustainable social development.
"In a rapidly changing world, universities shoulder the important mission of advancing knowledge, nurturing future talent and promoting social development," Ip added.
HKUST Council Chairman Hsiao-Wuen Shih said in a speech that AI is reshaping knowledge creation, talent cultivation and social development at an unprecedented speed, while geopolitical changes continue to affect the global higher education landscape. "Facing a new era in higher education, we must move forward together to ensure universities continue to be an important force for nurturing talent, driving innovation and promoting global progress for the benefit of humanity," he said.
